Why Do Email Signature Elements Appear Distorted in Reply Threads?

Signature Distortion in Email Replies: A Common Email Client Behavior

If you're noticing distorted or missing elements in an email signature when viewing it within a reply or forwarded email thread, this behavior is not caused by Opensense. It is a standard behavior of most email clients.

Here’s why:

  • Opensense processes only the initial outgoing email you send. Once your message is sent, how the email and its signature appear in subsequent replies or forwards is entirely managed by the recipient’s email client.

  • Email clients differ in how they handle inline images and formatting. Some strip images, convert them to attachments, compress them, or reformat the layout—especially in threaded views or forwarded messages.

  • This happens regardless of whether an Opensense signature is present or not. It is simply the way most email platforms manage email content during rendering.

What Happens When Your Email Is Forwarded Back to You

If someone replies to or forwards your email and you receive it again, keep in mind:

  • The email is now being rendered by their email client, not yours.

  • Since Opensense is not involved in processing that message, any image distortion or formatting issues are due to the recipient’s client, not Opensense.

Signature Issues in Direct Emails

If you are experiencing broken images or distorted formatting in a directly sent email (not part of a reply or forward), then the issue may be related to your setup.

In particular:

  • A common cause is a missing or misconfigured CNAME entry in your domain’s DNS settings, which prevents signature images from loading correctly.
